Two major approaches in upholstery

Traditional technique

Requires patience and humility, as each step must be carefully executed. I use materials such as horsehair, coconut, jute bag, handmade springs, 100% wool felt.

Traditional upholstery

The art of heritage craftsmanship

Traditional upholstery is characterised by the use of high-quality, natural materials, each carefully selected for durability and authenticity:

Horsehair

One of the most durable natural materials.

Coconut fibre

Provides firm support while remaining breathable.

Jute webbing

Forms the foundation of the seat, ensuring stability.

Wool felt

A natural insulator that enhances comfort.

Cotton, linen

Used for padding and securing materials.

Springs in traditional upholstery are tied by hand using different methods:

French tying

Precise, tight spring arrangement for long-lasting resilience.

German tying

Focused on even weight distribution.

English tying

Ensures strong, high-tension support.

Scandinavian tying

A balance between firmness and comfort.

Unlike modern upholstery, traditional methods do not use foam. Instead, they rely on layered natural fillings, carefully secured with stitching rather than adhesives.

✔ Best for: restoring antique, vintage, and mid-century furniture (1939-1980), ensuring longevity and authenticity.

Contemporary upholstery

Modern comfort & innovation

Modern upholstery is designed for speed, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. It uses:

Upholstery foam

Available in different densities for customized comfort.

Dacron fibre

Provides a plush feel and smooth finish.

Synthetic padding

Ensures furniture is soft and supportive.

Elastic webbing

Offers more flexibility compared to traditional jute webbing.

✔ Best for: new furniture, commercial projects, modern designs, and quick turnarounds.
