Two major approaches in upholstery
Traditional technique
Requires patience and humility, as each step must be carefully executed. I use materials such as horsehair, coconut, jute bag, handmade springs, 100% wool felt.
Contemporary technique
Has many creative solutions and innovations. I use my long-standing practice in the profession, knowledge and creativity to create my own style.
Traditional upholstery
The art of heritage craftsmanship
- Uses natural materials (horsehair, coconut fibre, wool, jute, cotton)
- Employs hand-stitched and tied springs (French, German, English, and Scandinavian tying techniques)
- Assembled with non-elastic webbing and tacks instead of staples
- Requires specialist skills, patience, and discipline
- Longevity-focused, ensuring that furniture lasts for generations
Traditional upholstery is characterised by the use of high-quality, natural materials, each carefully selected for durability and authenticity:

Springs in traditional upholstery are tied by hand using different methods:
French tying
Precise, tight spring arrangement for long-lasting resilience.
German tying
Focused on even weight distribution.
English tying
Ensures strong, high-tension support.
Scandinavian tying
A balance between firmness and comfort.
Unlike modern upholstery, traditional methods do not use foam. Instead, they rely on layered natural fillings, carefully secured with stitching rather than adhesives.
✔ Best for: restoring antique, vintage, and mid-century furniture (1939-1980), ensuring longevity and authenticity.
Contemporary upholstery
Modern comfort & innovation
- Uses modern materials (upholstery foam, synthetic padding, Dacron)
- Relies on staples and upholstery machines for speed and efficiency
- Prioritises cost-effectiveness and convenience
- Offers a variety of fabric choices, including performance materials
- Often focuses on design flexibility and modern aesthetics
Modern upholstery is designed for speed, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. It uses:
